It’s no surprise that skiing and snowboarding are the main draws to the snowy season in North Lake Tahoe. However, many visitors during the winter months often look for other ways to enjoy this winter wonderland without strapping skis or snowboards on their feet. With record setting snow storms this winter season, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see this year’s snow related activities extend well into the spring! For those visiting the Tahoe area in the next few months, keep reading below for our guide to non-skiing and snowboarding winter recreation in Tahoe!
Ice Skating:
Few winter activities are as cherished and fun as ice skating. Luckily, North Lake Tahoe has numerous community and privately owned ice rinks to choose from! For those staying at Red Wolf Lodge at Olympic Valley or Olympic Village Inn, we recommend checking out the Everline Resort (closest) or the community ice rink in Tahoe City. If you’re staying in Tahoe Vista at Red Wolf Lakeside Lodge or Tahoe Sands Resort, then the ice rink at Northstar California Resort or in Truckee would be your best options. Be sure to check each rink’s informational page before you visit for operating hours and weather closures.
Snow-Tubing and Sledding:
For those with young children, snow-tubing and sledding are likely high on your list of activities. Fortunately most of the larger ski areas like Palisades Tahoe and Northstar California have dedicated tubing areas! For those who prefer sledding, most grocery and hardware stores in the area sell sleds and saucers. In fact, simply driving around town will likely lead you to a number of great sledding hills!
Snowshoeing:
There are few winter activities more peaceful than snowshoeing. It offers incredible exercise and most can learn the basics within just a few minutes of trying on their first pair! The best part? North Lake Tahoe is a mecca for world world class snowshoeing destinations that offer incredible lake views and breathtaking alpine vistas. For those staying in both Olympic Valley and Tahoe Vista, we recommend Mt. Rose Meadow, Martis Valley, Olympic Valley, and the Tahoe Rim Trail!
Snowmobile Tours:
One of the best aspects of staying in North lake Tahoe is the access to beginner-friendly guided snowmobile tours. Even better, most tour guides take you to incredible viewpoints overlooking the lake! This is a great activity for groups or couples who want to get out and explore the snowy forests of the Tahoe area. For those looking to book a tour, we recommend Coldstream Adventures, and Lake Tahoe Snowmobile Tours.
